Cripplegate, an area of the City of London, has existed
since before Roman times and has had a varied and sometimes
colourful history.
This Ward is one of 25 such voting wards in the City.
It is the second largest in size. The area covered
includes approximately two-thirds of Barbican, part of the
Guildhall complex, six Livery Halls, the City of London School
for Girls, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama as well as a
large number of office buildings and shops

The objects of Cripplegate Ward Club,
founded in 1878 are:
| (a) to encourage Members to
take an active interest in the civic affairs of our City
in general and Cripplegate Ward in particular |
| (b) to organise social
functions for the benefit of members. To arrange
lectures, debates and visits of general interest |
| (c) to support any organisation
or appeal of a charitable nature within the law |
The Club follows the City tradition of
being non-political, undenominational and non-sectarian. The
current membership is in excess of 200 of whom about one third
live in Barbican or on the Golden Lane Estate.

The Ward Club annual programme of social
events comprises certain set functions. The Civic Luncheon
in Guildhall and usually in the presence of the Lord Mayor is
held following the Annual General Meeting at which the new
Master is elected and installed. This takes place usually
in February or March. An Annual Banquet is held in
the Autumn and nearer Christmas, the Carol Service which is held
in a prominent City Church, often St Giles Cripplegate.
Other events organised each year reflect
the interests of the current Master. Usually these include
guided museum and exhibition visits of topical interest.
Sometimes an illustrated talk held in historic surroundings by
distinguished lecturers such as historian Gustav Milne. At
other times we enjoy visits to buildings both old and new
or to musical and dramatic productions. The inclusion of
suitable refreshments at events affords Members the opportunity
to make new friends with similar interests in the City and Ward,
another important function of the Club.
|
|
The Club is
administered by a committee consisting of the Master, the Upper
and Under Wardens and six Assistants along with the Honorary
Secretaries (Office & Functions), the Honorary Treasurer,
all Past Masters and various co-opted members. The titles
given to the officers reflect the age and traditions of the
Club. The Alderman for the Ward is typically the President of
the Club and the Cripplegate members of Common Council are also
members.
