ERNEST ANGELL

Ernest, who died on 30 June, had a long connection with the City. He was a chorister at St. Stephen’s Church, Coleman Street before the war and his career was in banking (here and in New York). He was one of the Barbican’s earliest residents and moved into Speed House in 1969, where he remained until his death. In 1991 he was elected to the Court of Common Council as a representative of this ward.

Ernest was a charming, kindly and gentle man who was always concerned for the welfare of others. He was a good and caring neighbour and, for many years, as a resident chaired his House Group and served on the committee of the Barbican Association. As a Common Councilman, he continued to be active in Estate matters, but also was involved citywide in housing, community services and education. He represented the City with distinction on the governing bodies of the Barbican YMCA and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

All the above he did without seeking personal reward or status and despite his wife Esme’s long and distressing illness and the fact that for over 20 years he was suffering from cancer. Even though he was much incapacitated in his last months he continued to attend meetings thoroughly prepared and ready to contribute. All the Ward Members and myself and indeed all those whom his life touched will remember Ernest with great fondness and affection.

(Alderman Sir Gavyn Arthur)

The Committee welcome the loan of items of historical interest such as photographs or  brochures.
All original documents will be returned to the owners.

The Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are huge gaps in the records. Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us.

If anyone is able to offer any information, no matter how little, please contact us.
