Anthony Hunt MSc FRICS
1943 - 2004
Ward Club Functions Secretary

Cripplegate Ward Club has lost one of its most faithful members. Anthony (Tony) Hunt, who died on September 3rd 2004, was the hard-working Events Secretary for some years. The Honorary Secretary and several Past Masters in particular will remember with gratitude his efforts to make the function year smooth and efficient. Another part of his duties was the assembly and posting of all the various notices to the members. New members will remember Tony who took the trouble to introduce himself and make them welcome at functions, especially that all-important first function.

Anthony Hunt was born 15th March 1943 at Ripley in Surrey and qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1970 becoming later a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He worked in private practice until 1978 when he joined the Civil Service at the Property Services Agency (PSA) which was a part of the Department of the Environment. In the Civil Service Tony worked with the Lord Chancellor’s Department on law courts, the Home Office on prisons and the Ministry of Defense on military bases which included visits to the Middle East on a project with the Saudi Arabian National Guard. The PSA was privatised in 1992. He was seconded to the purchasing company for 9 months then elected to take early retirement. Tony Hunt completed a post-graduate M.Sc. degree in 1987 at the University of the South Bank in Property Development and Project Management.

He moved to live in Barbican in 1977 and remained there until his final illness. An active resident he became involved in estate matters and served on the Lift Liaison Committee as a representative of the Barbican Association.

In 1983 he was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London and two years later joined the Cripplegate Ward Club. He was a Patron of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a Friend of the London Symphony Orchestra. Leisure periods found him swimming, mainly at the Islington Leisure Centre, or travelling extensively as far as North America, Canada, Scandinavia, Russia, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. He was a prominent Freemason having attained the rank of PAGDC.

He died in hospital in Margate, peacefully, following a tough battle with cancer. His funeral took place at Margate Crematorium on Wednesday 15th September. The Club has made a donation on behalf of the members in memory of Tony to Cancer Research.

Cripplegate Ward Club is the poorer for his passing.  Our friend Tony Hunt did a lot of work. It was well done, and much enjoyed. He will be missed greatly......

The Committee welcome the loan of items of historical interest such as photographs or  brochures.
All original documents will be returned to the owners.

Many of the Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are huge gaps in the records. Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us.

If anyone is able to offer any information, no matter how little, please contact us.
