Edward George Cornish OBE
BSc(Econ) FRICS
1910 - 2004

Edward George Cornish, Ted to all his numerous friends, who died on 14th July aged 94, was one of our most loyal and involved Members.  He became a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers in March 1970 and in September 1977 was elected an Assistant to the Court.  Sadly he felt it necessary to resign as an Assistant in 1980 for a difficult health reason which happily was cured.

He joined Cripplegate Ward Club in August 1973 and six years later was elected our Honorary Secretary.  He followed Alderman Sir Peter Gadsden GBE who had stood down as Secretary prior to his being elected Lord Mayor and taking that office in November 1979.   Ted worked hard for our Club during his term of office and not only arranged many very successful functions but conducted the election of 86 new Members.  Without doubt the good reputation of the Club both in its social and City standing and the smoothness of its administration was enhanced during those years.

When Mrs Gwen Cornish died on 3 November 1982 Ted Cornish was bereft. With the grit and determination coupled with that sense of duty so often demonstrated by him he remained as Secretary until the end of the term of Master Sir Peter Gadsden GBE (see Masters Roll). In February 1983 did a most careful transfer of office to Sylvester A Crowley JP AIMLS.  During his time as Secretary he was assisted by our late member George Alan Jones MA FRPS (see Obituary) Alan remained as Assistant Secretary and together with Ted made the new Secretary's life, a new appointment, with a new Master, Deputy Wilfrid Dewhirst  FRSA (see Masters Roll), as trouble free as they were able.

Ted Cornish continued to serve on the Club Committee as a co-opted member every year until he resigned this position in March 1996 when he was elected an Honorary Member.  Later in retirement he continued in his enthusiasm and his support for all the Club activities..........

The Committee welcome the loan of items of historical interest such as photographs or  brochures.
All original documents will be returned to the owners.

Many of the Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are huge gaps in the records. Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us.

If anyone is able to offer any information, no matter how little, please contact us.
