 Roger Daily-Hunt FRICS  Master 2003-2004
1938 -2005

Roger Daily-Hunt, who was a Common Council man for this ward from 1989 until last year, died on 20 March. He was 67 and had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for 12 months.

A successful and self made man, who had built up a thriving quantity surveying business, he nevertheless found the time and energy to make a significant contribution to the community.

In retirement he had taken over chairmanship of East London and the City Mental Health Trust, which was going through a major crisis. He took on this task with the same courage and quiet determination with which he subsequently faced his terrible illness.

Over the years he played a prominent role (in many cases as Chairman) in the Cripplegate Foundation, St Luke's Parochial Trust, the Lady Eleanor Holies School, City and Hackney Mind, the London Drug Policy Forum and the Cromwell Tower House Group. He had just become Master of our own Ward Club when his illness was diagnosed, but to the extent physically possible he played a full part in its activities.

Roger was remarkable for his great wisdom, his sense of community and justice, and for his personal kindness. I personally miss him greatly and I know that many others do so too. Our thoughts go out to his wife Susan and his children and
grandchildren.

===============================================================

Although suffering deeply from his illness Roger managed to conduct his Mastership of the Ward Club for almost all of the year and was able to attend most of the functions.  His determination to enjoy his year of office will long be remembered by the Committee of the Ward Club, his friends and those other members of the Club with whom he came into contact.

The Committee welcome the loan of items of historical interest such as photographs or  brochures.
All original documents will be returned to the owners.

The Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are huge gaps in the records. Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us.

If anyone is able to offer any information, no matter how little, please contact us.
