Sir Peter
Gadsden GBE AC MA DSc FEng |
The Arms of Sir Peter Drury Haggerston Gadsden, GBE, AC, FREng, Lord Mayor of London 1979-80, are quartered with those of Haggerston as Lady Gadsden is the heraldic heiress of the 11th Baronet. The Maple Leaves in Sir Peter's Arms allude to Canada, where he was born, while the Teazel alludes to the Clothworkers' Company of which was a Liveryman. As a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Sir Peter was entitled to Supporters to his Arms: the dexter Supporter, a Lion guardant, is holding a Cross-crosslet fitchy in allusion to the Ward of Farringdon Without, while the Koala Bear symbolises the many connections which Sir Peter had with Australia, and the Geologist's Hammer which it holds refers to his mining interests. The motto, "Thoroughly with Enthusiasm", provided the title for his biography.

Many of the Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are huge gaps in the records. Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us. |
