Master 1977 - Charles Gamble Grant MA

Charles Gamble Grant MA, a solicitor,  served for many years as the Clerk to the Worshipful Company of Pewterers.  The new hall was built in 1960 following the destruction of the City during the Second World War.  Situated in Oat Lane it was now within the Ward of Cripplegate and has remained so until boundary changes in 2003 placed it in Bassishaw Ward.   Mr Grant was instumental in nurturing the deep feelings of friendship between the Club and the Company.  In this he followed the example of his father Arthur Stanley Grant of whom more can be read earlier in these pages.  Mr Grant Senior was Clerk to the Pewterers' Company and was a Master of Cripplegate Ward Club during the 1940's.  The goodwill that was so carefully fostered all those years ago,  remains to this day.  Our Ward Club recognised the valuable contribution over many years on the part of Mr Charles Grant by making him an Honorary Life Member in 1993.

Charles Grant became a member of Cripplegate Ward Club in January 1962 and in due course progressed through all the usual offices finally being elected Master in 1977.

The AGM and the Annual Luncheon were as usual held at Guildhall  during the mayoralty of: Commodore Sir Robin Danvers Penrose Gillett Bt GBE RD DSc RNR

During the year the Club held a fine party at Pewterers' Hall where the master was Clerk.

He led a further Club group visit to the Post Office Museum.

The Annual Banquet was held at Armoury House, Headquarters of the Honorable Artillery Company.  The guest speaker that evening was Sir Francis Avery-Jones.

In his retirement, Mr Charles Grant remains an active, committed member of our Club....

Return to the Master Roll

The Committee welcome the loan of items of historical interest such as photographs or  brochures.
All original documents will be returned to the owners.

The Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are huge gaps in the records. Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us.

If anyone is able to offer any information, no matter how little, please contact us.
