| Personal profile....
After leaving Trinity College, Oxford in 1935, Francis Tufton joined the firm of Simmons and Simmons, articled to Sir Percy Simmons. In 1939 upon qualifying as a solicitor he was called to active service in the Royal Navy for the duration until 1945. Returning to Simmons and Simmons be became a Salaried Partner in 1946. In 1949 he moved from Simmons and Simmons and joined the firm of Markby Stewart and Wadsons, and became a partner in 1950. He remained with this firm, working as a Company Lawyer until retirement in 1978, having been the Senior Partner for the previous seven years. |

|
Francis Tufton joined the Cripplegate Ward Club in March 1962 and maintained an unbroken membership for thirty five years until 1997. During that time he progressed through all of the usual offices and was elected Master in 1979. Sir Kenneth Cork GBE DLitt was the Lord Mayor at that time and was the guest of honour at the new Master's first function - the Annual Luncheon held at Guildhall. |
|
| The year of office was marked with a visit by the Ward Club to the Armouries at the Tower of London and another another successful visit to the headquarters of the Armistice Poppy makers establishment. | |
| In November of 1979 our
past Secretary, Alderman Peter Gadsden was elected Lord Mayor.
The Master presented the newly knighted Sir Peter Gadsden GBE MA DSc FEng with an illuminated address on behalf of the Members. |
|
| The year drew to a
close in fine style with the Carol Service at St Giles
Church. A personal friend of Francis Tufton, the Bishop of London The Right Reverend Gerald Ellison was able to accept the invitation to officiate and to preach. This was a happy time for the Master as His Grace and Mr Tufton had shared time together at Oxford and again as shipmates during World War II notably during the Battle of Crete. |

The Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are huge gaps in the records.
Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us.
