Chief Commoner Deputy John Alfred Barker OBE

Deputy of the Ward of Cripplegate Within since 1993, having been elected as a Common Councilman in 1981, John Barker's Livery Company is the Basketmakers

His professional background is the London Stock Exchange, having worked for two firms - Gilt-edge Jobbers and Brokers - Blue Button. He also served the Inner London Probation Service in every part of inner London except Tower Hamlets. This was in the domestic, juvenile and adult courts where he led field and community service units, training, hostel and police liaison. He was also on the local Review Committee of H.M Prison in Wandsworth.

John Barker was educated at Neale's Mathematical School and the City of London College and served in the Intelligence Corps of the TA & AVR. He was a member of the councils of the Metropolitan Borough of Holborn and the London Borough of Camden where he also served as Deputy Mayor.

He cites hill and mountain walking, travel, food and wine as his interests and he is a member of many organisations concerned with the country and the built environment.

Since becoming a Common Councilman, Mr. Barker has served as the Chairman of the Port Health & Environmental Services Committee and is the recent past Chairman of the Barbican Centre Committee:

The City of London has further appointed him to other outside bodies including - the Barbican YMCA Board of Management, which he chaired, the Court of City University, Board of Governors of Christ's Hospital, and the Board of Governors of the Bridewell Royal Hospital. John had a most successful year as our Master in 1992-83 and is held in high regard in the Ward of Cripplegate and our Ward Club.
