CRIPPLEGATE WARD CLUB Report for year 1999/2000 Event 1 Royal Mail Sorting Office and City University Club Date: 14th April, 1999 Price: £14.50 Attendance: 28 Comments: We were impressed by the enthusiasm of the guides and by the end of the tour we all appreciated the importance of the post code and of putting it on a separate line. The underground miniature railway for the mail was a fascination that could have occupied many of us for hours. The City University Club made us most welcome in their comfortable lounge with open fires where we enjoyed a most delicious buffet. Event 2 Tea at the Ritz Date: 12th May, 1999 Price: £24.50 Attendance: 31 Comments: Having chosen a preferred blend of tea we all enjoyed ample quantities of delicate sandwiches and cakes. As we had the last sitting we were able to occupy the same area for a few alcoholic drinks before returning home. Event 3 Lambeth Palace Date: 3rd June, 1999 Price: £9.50 Attendance: 30 Comments: A diminutive nun was our guide who positively bubbled with enthusiasm. We were pleased to have been able to see the crypt which might have been undergoing repairs. The State Rooms included personal family photographs belonging to the present Archbishop. Preceding the tour we took lunch in the adjoining Museum of Garden History where regrettably we had to queue because the management had not recorded our reservation. Event 4 Down House (home of Charles Darwin) Date: 17th July, 1999 Price: Varied from adult travelling by bus at £17.00 Attendance: 33 Comments: After leaving the ugly suburbs of London we had perfect conditions for our day. We descended on the two Public Houses in Downe village for lunch and having toured the house with electronic handsets we were able to relax in the extensive gardens where we were able to take tea. Event 5 Derek and Joan Kemp’s London Home in Barton Street Date: 20th September, 1999 Price:
£1.00 Attendance: 28 Comments: Derek gave us a comprehensive history of their house and the surrounding area after which Joan gave us a very sumptuous buffet with wine. They allowed us to spread ourselves about their very comfortable home and made us feel part of their family. Event 6 Annual Dinner at The Carlton Club Date: 29th October, 1999 Price: £52.00 Attendance: 91 Comments: We were very honoured to have as our Principal Guest and Speaker The Rt.Hon.Peter Brooke, H.P. who with only sketchy notes gave us a very fluent discourse on various events during his long term as H.P. for the City and Westminster. We were made very welcome by The Canton Club and we had an excellent meal prepared by their resident chef. Event 7 Lord Mayor’s Show Date: 13th November, Price: £26.00 Attendance: 27 Comments: Our President kindly allowed us the use of Guildhall to view the procession and for lunch. We not only filled the table allocated to us for lunch but also filled a few available seats on adjoining tables. Event 8 Guildhall Art Gallery and Carol Service Date: 9th December, 1999 Price: Art Gallery: £5.00 Carol Service: £20.00 Attendance: Art Gallery: 15 Carol Service: 66 Comments: We were very impressed with the Lady Curator at the Art Gallery. Our tour was scheduled for just one hour but her enthusiasm kept us fascinated for almost two hours. Her love of her subject obviously made her job immensely rewarding. At the Carol Service we were pleased to welcome The Company of Firefighters and we hope that they will share our Service again in the future. The Company of Firefighters had arranged their own reception following the Service. Members of The Cripplegate Ward Club and their guests adjourned to the Pewterers’ Hall for an excellent cold buffet and mulled wine. Event 9 Millennium Dome Date: 29th January, 2000 price: Varied from £20.00 for an adult. Attendance: 14 Comments: The structure was impressive and together with the Jubilee Line was a credit to the times we live in. The contents were both historic and futuristic which is a sound foundation for a millennium exhibition. However the presentations sometimes left us wondering about the message we were supposed to have received. The level of electronic audience participation reminded us of a seaside arcade. Perhaps the exhibition is not intended for those in more mature years. Event 10 L.S.O. rehearsal Date: 11th February, 2000 Price: £5.00 Attendance: 11 Comments: We were fortunate and privileged to hear Mstislav Rostropovich play the Dvorak ‘cello concerto which must be one of the most compelling pieces in the orchestral repertoire. We also heard part of Maazel’s The Empty Pot and part of Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony under the baton of Maazel. In Summary I have very much enjoyed my year. It has been an honour to serve the Club and I very much hope that all of you who have attended functions have had a rewarding time. I wish my successor all the best for her year.

The Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are huge gaps in the records.
Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us.
