MASTER'S REPORT
2008 - 2009

I was delighted and honoured to be elected as Master of the Club, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My year began on 14th March 2008 at the Annual General Meeting in Vintners' Hall, followed by the Civic Luncheon.

We were honoured to have Sheriff Ian Luder and his wife as our guests, and despite clashing with the Ward Motes elsewhere, the event was gratifyingly well attended and was most enjoyable.

On April 17th we had an afternoon visit to the Foundling Museum (including the Handel Museum) in Coram's Fields. Two excellent guides told us the fascinating story of London's orphans and how Thomas Coram set up a 'hospital' for their education and training and about the huge demand there was for places. This was followed by a very popular cream tea in the museum cafe.

On June 28th we took a small party to the races at Windsor. It is a delightfully situated Racecourse on the banks of the Thames, with Windsor Castle clearly in view. We watched the afternoon's racing card and there were one or two winners but nobody hit the jackpot. A picnic lunch had been arranged and, on a glorious early summer's day, the proceedings were watched in a mildly alcoholic haze.

On the evening of July 17th we visited St. John's Gate. The gate is only a short distance North West of the ward, but it is surprising how many Barbican residents have not been there. Today the gate house and surrounding buildings are better known as the home of St. John's Ambulance, but there is also a museum of the ancient Order of St. John housed in the sixteenth century Gatehouse, and on the other side of Clerkenwell Road a splendid Chapel with a very old crypt. After the guided tour and glass of wine and sandwiches, members were given a talk by the Master about the charities associated with St. Giles Church and the ward of Cripplegate.

We joined with United Wards Club on September 19th to take a coach to visit Brogdale, the home of the National Apple and Pear Collection. We had lunch with a cider tasting at Brogdale before moving on to visit the old Shepherd Neame Brewery in Framlingham. Despite tasting their products at the end of the visit, there was no singing on the return journey.

On October 15th we held our Annual Banquet in the Crypts of Guildhall. Normally the annual luncheon is in Guildhall and the Banquet in a Livery Hall, but events were reversed this year because Guildhall has been closed for refurbishment. As a result we were able to enter through the newly opened Basinghall Street entrance and see the restored Old Museum in all its new splendour. The crypts, with the addition of candlelight, make for a most atmospheric setting.

The principal guest was Sir Gavyn Arthur, our recently retired Alderman, and we were able to say goodbye to him and present him with a gift from the Club for all that he has done for the Ward. This was also the first occasion on which we were able to welcome Alderman David Graves as our newly elected President. The banquet appeared to be enjoyed by all and numbers attending were higher than for some years. I was delighted to be able to announce at the Banquet that the Committee had elected Barbara Allan an Honorary Member, alongside our retiring President Sir Gavyn Arthur.

In November we again took a party to watch the Lord Mayor's Show from Guildhall Yard. Sadly it was a wet day and many retreated to watch in the dry. The parade was followed by lunch in the Guildhall Club. It was as ever most enjoyable, with venison casserole and a quite fantastic cheeseboard.

In December we joined up with Aldersgate Ward Club for a Carol Service in the Guild Church of St. Botolph's Aldersgate, followed by a buffet in the Guildhall Club. By putting the two clubs together, well over 90 people attended. That was the final event of my year, as a planned visit in January proved not to be possible.

I now hand over as Master to Sandra Worsdall, who has planned an eventful year for the Club. I am sure that all Members of Cripplegate Ward Club will join me in wishing her every success.

Lastly, I should like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your most generous support. It has been a privilege to serve as Master and I should like to thank the Committee for all their help and friendship, in particular the Hon Treasurer, Past Master Sidney Morton, and of course the Hon Secretary, Barbara Allan.

Return to the Master Roll

The Committee welcome the loan of items of historical interest such as photographs or  brochures.
All original documents will be returned to the owners.

Many of the Club Records for the years prior to 1959 have been lost. Most of the books vanished for ever during the War years. You will notice there are gaps in the records. Although some information has been gathered from the senior Club members and from the descendants of former Masters it has proved impossible to be sure of all who occupied the Chair in many of these earlier years. The official and social activities of the Club during those years are also lost to us.

If anyone is able to offer any information, no matter how little, please contact us.
