Master
David Bland OBE PhD

Dr David Bland is a son of the vicarage from Darwen Lancashire. 

He attended Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn, then went to Durham University where he was President of the Union Society, graduated BA and began research. Gaining a research fellowship at Sheffield University, he completed his PhD and taught Economics and Economic History there for 25 years; serving also as Warden of Sorby Hall, Dean of Social Sciences and Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

In 1988 he became Director-General of the Chartered Insurance Institute, based at the Insurance Hall which was then safely in Cripplegate Ward. On the advice of his predecessor, Pat Saxton, he joined the Ward Club in 1990. 

He has served as Master of the Firefighters and Insurers Companies and is a Wheelwright. In the summer of 2010 he will again become Master of the Worshipful Company of Firefighters due to the vacancy arising from the lamented death of Rev David Rhodes, whose year it was to have been.

David is currently Chairman of the Water Consumers Council for London and S.E. England, chairman of two small companies, and Treasurer and Trustee of various charities.

He lives on Wapping High Street and in Bakewell, Derbyshire; and he also has a cottage in Slovakia. He received the OBE for services to education in insurance and financial services in 1998, the Medaille d'Honneur of the French Ecole Nationale d'Assurance in 1997, and the Gold Medal of the Chartered Insurance Institute in 2000.

Interests: writing, walking, music, the Church of England, the Athenaeum; and Blackburn Rovers. Status: Divorced.

Dr Bland is an expert on risk and uncertainty, especially in Financial Services, with a reputation for thoughtful leadership.

Head of East London Business School, and Governor of the University of East London
With more than 150 academic staff and 3,000 students: the financial underpinning of the University.

1989-2000
Director-General of the Chartered Insurance Institute: Chairman of the Society of Financial Advisers, Chairman of the Society of Technicians in Insurance, and MD of CII Enterprises Ltd  Providing improving services for 75,000 members in 130 countries; restructured the insurance syllabus and developed the Financial Planning Certificate that is now held by more than 100,000 people.

1964-89
The University of Sheffield. Joined the University as a Research Fellow and rose to be Dean of Social Sciences {including the Business School} and then Pro-Vice Chancellor 1984-8;  Warden of Sorby Hall of Residence 9 years: Member of Senate 20 years and of Council 12 years. Teaching: Economic Theory, Economic Development, aspects of Economic History;
Supervision and examination of doctoral and masters degree students.

Dr Bland is author of a dozen books and over 100 articles 
[Principles and Practice of Insurance has been translated into 14 languages].
Appointed a visiting professor at Cass Business School; also at Moscow Finance Academy, Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, and the College of Insurance, Changsha, China.
Past-president of the Institute of Company Accountants. Served as a member of the Insurance Brokers Registration Council and of the disciplinary arm of its successor, the GISC.
Chairman of Postwatch, S E England, 2002-7. Chairman of Viapost Ltd, 2007-9. 
Chief Examiner in Treasury Risk, IRM, 2002-8.

1984 - 2000 Cripplegate Foundation working as PA to the then Clerk John Williams (until 1992) which included general organisation of the office and also duties as Grants Officer. Had several interesting holidays during this time trekking and camping through America, Egypt, Morocco and Sinai Desert.

Took early retirement December 2000.2001 to date After over 30 years of rush hour travelling, am enjoying retirement' very much. My time is spent gardening, DIY (necessity being the mother of invention), theatre, cinema and reading.A lot of my time, of course, is taken up with being the Honorary Secretary to Cripplegate Ward Club, a position I enjoy very much. It enables me to remain involved with the City and I have made some very good friends among the committee and members.

I became a Freeman of the City of London in 1984 and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers in 2008.

Mrs Sidney E A Morton 

 

I was born in Westminster, and have a twin sister Frederica. My father, Frederick Armstrong Morton was an accountant and commercial artist and my mother Lilian Winifred Morton was a secretary and bookkeeper. I am divorced with no children.

At the age of four my family moved to the United States, where I attended Highland Park Lutheran School in Pasadena until aged thirteen. My secondary education was completed back in England at The Elms Acton, followed by Ealing College of Art.

I have worked as a self-employed, freelance accountant and bookkeeper specialising in solicitors' accounts for the last seventeen years. From 1979 until 1987 I ran a catering business in the City in addition to doing part-time accounts work. I was employed in the European Finance Division of Reuters for four years following my marriage in 1975. Prior to that I worked in the hotel and catering trade.

I have been a City resident since 1975, in the Ward of Cripplegate. I moved to Ben Jonson House in 1996 after 21 years living in Andrewes House. I have been involved in local activities for many years, am a former secretary of the Barbican Association and served for a number of years on the social committee. 

I have been a Freeman of the City of London since 1979 and a member of the Guild of Freemen since 1989. I am Past Master and Hon Treasurer of Cripplegate Ward Club, Hon Treasurer of City Heritage Society and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers. I am also secretary of a small charity dedicated to the provision of medical and educational help to underdeveloped countries.
I still enjoy cooking and have retained an interest in wine. I have travelled widely and enjoy photography and drawing around the world. I like walking and keep-fit, reading, art and music.

Sandra Worsdall was born in Lincolnshire, educated at grammar school and read classics and graduated at Royal Holloway College, London University.

She qualified as a solicitor in 1981 after articles with Biddle & Co (now part of Pinsent Mason). After moving to Ashurst Morris Crisp as a property lawyer. she worked on developments in Docklands for the London Docklands Development Corporation and on property developments in the City and around the country.

In 1996 she joined Royal London Insurance as legal adviser and managed its commercial legal work, including acquisitions, reinsurance, and legal aspects of asset management.

She retired from legal work in 2006 and took a part time post with the National Trust co-ordinating volunteers at Knole in Kent. She is also a trustee and treasurer of Spring House Parenting Centre in Sevenoaks.

Her livery is the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.  

She is a Soroptimist and is engaged in fundraising and charitable activities locally.  Interests include history and current affairs, fine art (appreciation not execution), photography, walking, gardening and conversation.   She has lived in the Barbican for many years and now lives in Sevenoaks. (Her partner David Read died during her Mastership)
