POSTAL MUSEUM AND RIDE ON THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAY

God smiled, Wednesday 18 April was sunny and very warm after the recent snow and weeks of unseasonal cold and wet weather we had suffered. Fortunately not too warm, the scorcher was forecast for Thursday. The short walk on the quiet road in the welcome strong sunlight from the coffee shop to the start of the railway was a good contrast to the cool of the underground tunnel. The event was fully booked with forty-seven guests.

We met as arranged in the Museum's coffee shop at 3 30pm, the first twenty were given tickets for their underground railway ride and off they went while the others either chatted over coffee or tea or went round the Museum. Half an hour later twenty excited and happy faces returned as the next tranche of intrepid subterranean tourists made their way over to the railway, hotly pursued by the Master who suddenly remembered her role as the event photographer.

The third and last tranche of guests were safely escorted to their ride while the other guests were going round the museum reminiscing over the once familiar objects and sights featured in the displays, some having fun creating their own stamps. The atmosphere became reminiscent of a school trip with the excitement of the underground ride, the playfulness of the exhibits and members re-living the sights of their childhood.

After everyone had ridden on the underground train, the group made its way to the Sicilian restaurant in Gray's Inn Road, Luce e Limone. Fortunately, we had booked the entire Restaurant. Thankfully the owners had bi-fold doors at the front of the establishment and these were fully opened to take advantage of the wonderful weather keeping the restaurant comfortably cool as we filled it with our excited chatter. Open to the street and strong sunlight, we could almost imagine we were in Sicily. Three courses of genuine Sicilian food and plenty of wine followed and two and a half hours later happy groups of Cripplegate Ward Club members were to be seen making their various ways home along the Gray's Inn Road in the cooler but still light evening.

I would like to thank everyone for supporting this event and also those who have told me or written to me to say how much they enjoyed it. I have relayed the compliments received for the food and service to Luce e Limone.
