After graduating with an MA in Jurisprudence from St. John's College, Oxford, joined Lovell, White & King as an Articled Clerk in 1983, qualifying in 1985.  Remained with the firm (now Hogan Lovells International LLP) until September 2017 (working as a consultant with Hogan Lovells since September 2014). Now retired. 

In 2008 elected as the Alderman for the Ward of Cripplegate in the City of London (re-elected in 2014) and succeeded Sir Gavyn Arthur as President of the Cripplegate Ward Club.  Has gained considerable experience of Local Authority Governance (as a Member of the City Corporation's Standards Committee 2017-19 and its Standards Appeal Committee) and the education sector (Chairing the Board of Governors of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama 2012-15) together with experience of most of the City of London Corporation Committees.  Also Master of the City of London Solicitors Company 2017-18, a trustee of the St Paul’s Cathedral Chorister Trust, the Cripplegate Foundation and the Guildhall School Trust and a Governor of the Emanuel School.  Has sat as a Magistrate since 2009 (latterly on the Central London Bench).
