Alderman, Sir Peter Malden Studd
GBE KCVO MA DSc DL

PRESIDENT 1960 TO 1977

Peter Malden Studd was born in 1916 and became the Alderman for Cripplegate Within and Without in 1959.

He became the President of the Ward Club in 1960. He remained so until succeeded by William Allan Davis in 1977.

In the early days the Lord Mayor used to issue two Precepts, one for Within and one for Without, over both of which, separately, he presided on the Annual Election Day. When residents began to arrive at the Barbican flats the City Solicitor, Desmond Heap, advised that this practice was wrong legally so Cripplegate returned to being one Ward containing both Within and Without.

For those who visit the church of St Giles one of the items of beauty is the bracket that houses the Lord Mayor's Sword. This contains the Family Coat of Arms of Sir Peter Studd

Sir Peter has remained very active and interested in the City even though now long into his retirement so much so that as the senior former Lord Mayor he was hounoured with a special place at the Guildhall banquet to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002. In the picture Sir Peter can be seen seated between Her Majesty and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Barbican was much in the news during the times that Sir Peter was in office and so it can be recorded that he was the presiding officer as Lord Mayor, over the Court of Common Council that finally authorised the establishment of the Barbican Centre and Concert Hall.
